new desk

Awesomeness x 1million.

Still high off an entertaining excursion to Manayunk, I was walking home when I came across this really unique desk on the side of the street. Normally I pass up on anything that I can't carry myself, but I was in need of a desk and too fascinated by this one to just walk away.

But perhaps the best part of the story is the moving process.

because i can't get a cat..

I got the next best thing.

my new peace lily
Peace lilies apparently were named the best Desk Plant of 2007 (although none of the articles cite who ran this survey.. competition? whatever) because they are pretty and remove a lot of crap from the air (see wiki article). The florist told me it's also pretty difficult to kill, which pretty much convinced me that the peace lily and I were meant to be.

I think it looks a bit awkward right now because I don't have a nice pot for it or a proper home...but we'll get there when we get there :D

afraid of color

As I'm buying things for my new place, I feel a sense of burden with every decision. There's just so much commitment associated with each purchase, and it's a bit unnerving. (wow, i'm such a drama queen.)

The thing I fear the most I think is color. I love color and I want it everywhere in my place, but deciding which colors to use is giving me anxiety. So when I found myself at Target making my first household purchases post-move in, the choices were overwhelming. One item I got particularly hung up on was a wall clock - so many colors and styles! I spent a good amount of time waffling between 3 options, and then sought my parents' opinions. Of course they didn't care (my mom actually said the words, "I don't care."), so in the end I came away with this:

White on white - boring, I know! But in my defense, the only other options were black and neon blue, pink, and green.

spicy soy sauce recipe

I can't cook anything confidently besides a scrambled egg and ramen, so any culinary success is a huge achievement for me. Just wanted to share a spicy soy sauce recipe that has been working wonders for my various noodles and stir fry dishes:

Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup of water
  • 1/4 cup of soy sauce
  • 2-3 teaspoons of hot sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of packed brown sugar

furniture transformations

I think my own dresser is lovely as is, but it's missing a handle and I've been contemplating buying new ones. I would consider this my first step into the real decorating world (so much commitment associated with it!), so naturally progress has been slow (i.e. non-existent).

topic change: making a home

New job, new city, and finally my own apartment!
With this blog is sitting here, I have decided to chronicle a new obsession of mine - decorating my new place. It's been about a month and a half since I've moved out of my parents' house into my first real apartment, and it has been quite an adventure. I've been scouring interior design blogs obsessively, hoping to find ways to make my place a home as creatively (and inexpensively!) as possible. Let's hope this doesn't turn into a disaster...
